Doors: A Reflection on Life and Home
#1 - For you to grow, you should allow some doors to close.
I was watching 1899, the now-shelved Netflix series a few weeks back. The show tried an ambitious take on time travel and threw in an alternate universe theme as well into the mix. In the show, secret doors are used to connect the alternate universe and timelines. It got me thinking about how doors are a metaphor for life and how important they are in defining the homes we live in.
Throughout our lives, we will inhabit many homes, each with its own door that serves as a gateway to the memories and experiences of our time spent there. From my childhood home with its creaky brown one, to my many shared homes, to my first apartment, to my imagined dream home with its grand entrance, each door holds its own unique significance for me.
As a child, the doors of my home represented safety and security. They were always open, welcoming me in after a long day at school or play. But as I grew older, I began to see it in a different light. They were a reflection of the people who lived inside, each with their own unique experiences and stories to tell.
In my teenage years, the doors of my home became a symbol of rebellion. They represented a desire to break free from the constraints and venture out into the world. But as I stepped out into the unknown, I realized that what I once saw as an obstacle were actually an opportunity. They represented the choices I had to make and the journey I had to take to become the person I am today.
As an adult, it represents something entirely different. They're a symbol of the stability and comfort we so desperately seek, a place to return to after a long day at work. They're a reminder that no matter where life takes me, there will always be a door open, waiting for me to walk through.
Philosophically, it serves as a metaphor for the choices we make in life. Just as a door offers us the option to enter or exit a room, so do our choices. It can either lead us down one path or another. The decision to walk through a door can represent a commitment to a certain path or a new beginning, just as the choice to stay on the other side can symbolize a reluctance to change.
It can also represent the people we encounter on our journey. Some are like open doors, inviting us in with warmth and hospitality. Others are closed, hard to open and even harder to get past. But just as every door presents a choice, so do the people we meet along the way. It's up to us to decide whether to let them in or to keep them at arm's length.
In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, it offer us a sense of control and empowerment. They represent the power of choice and the ability to shape our own destiny. Whether we're standing at the threshold of a new beginning or closing the door on an old chapter, it is a reminder that the choices we make today will shape the person we become tomorrow.
Whether grand or humble, each door holds its own unique significance, reminding us of the journey we've taken and the life we've lived. So the next time you walk through a door, take a moment to reflect on all that it represents and all that lies beyond.
P.S. – Pictures of some interesting doors I have come across in my recent travels.
A ‘modern’ door in King’s Landing, may be you can send a snail mail to Jon Snow!
Looks fancy, hard to maintain. Zadar, Croatia
The cute-one from Volendam, The Netherlands
This one may give you access to the imp, Tyrion Lannister himself. Knock! Knock!
